News and Notes
-
- Welcome to the Pre-K web page! The first quarter of the
school year has been very busy for us.
We visited the pumpkin patch, enjoyed a visit from the Louisville Metro Fire
Department, had a wonderful time at our Halloween party, and worked on
Thanksgiving projects with our fourth grade buddies. I am amazed at the progress the children have
made in following directions, printing their names, recognizing letters and
numbers, and most importantly playing and working peacefully with their
peers. Please keep up all the wonderful
teaching and reinforcement you are doing at home.
- We are
looking forward to our visit to the Derby Dinner Playhouse in early December,
and of course preparing for the birth of Jesus.
We will prepare for Jesus’ birthday with a Posada and party on December
16th. Since school will be
dismissed at 11:00am that day, the Pre-k will be dismissed at 10:45am so we can
avoid the rush of the older children. If
your child is normally a car rider you will need to pick your child up in the
classroom at 10:45 on December 16th.
- I’ve listed below the goals for the year so you will have an
idea of our plans for the remainder of the year. We wish you and your families a wonderful
Christmas and we look forward to new adventures with your child in the New
Year.

- Welcome to the Pre-K web page. I will post updates from time to time
throughout the year to remind you of important upcoming events and give you
some ideas of things you can do at home to reinforce what we do at school.
- The students will begin their
journey through the alphabet soon with a look at the letter “O” for ocean and
“A” for apple. Our aim in preschool is to introduce your child to each letter
of the alphabet, the strokes required to make it, and the sound the letter
makes. While some children will master these skills, mastery is not our goal.
- We work very hard on emotional,
social, fine and gross motor skills, as well as cognitive skills in our
preschool program. Our school participates in the PeaceBuilders program and you
will hear your child talk about using their words a lot. We encourage the
children to always work out their disagreements by using their words and not
their hands. They are also encouraged to use their words to explain to the
teachers if they have a problem. We say a PeaceBuilder pledge each day, and you
will hear more about this at conference time.
- The
children have been working on printing their name, and you can reinforce this
at home. Please remember to help your child use a proper grasp of the pencil,
old habits die hard, and to use only an uppercase first letter. Other
fine motor skills we have been working on include cutting with scissors,
coloring with crayons and markers, and opening and closing a glue bottle.
- We work on counting daily at our
calendar time and the children have been
- introduced
to patterning, a skill necessary for math. We will work on one to one
- correspondence
when we make octopus and starfish for our ocean theme and will
- continue
to learn about the numbers from 1-5 throughout the coming quarter.
- Another skill we work on daily is
listening for directions as well as comprehension. We do many of our projects
as a group with the teacher giving step by step directions. We try to make our
projects interesting so that the children will be motivated to listen and
follow directions. I also use music and
movement to help the children develop listening skills.
- Show and tell is on Fridays. Your
child is welcome to bring in an item
- that
relates to our current theme or the letter we are studying. They may also bring
in a book and share their favorite part. Pictures are also a good show and tell idea.
