May 2006

Week of May 1-5

We will celebrate Derby week by learning about horses, hot air balloons, steamboats, and more! On Thursday, St. Pius X School will have our own Derby Festival events. The kindergarten students will get to be jockeys and ride horses that we have made. The students will dismiss at 1:00 that day. Our letter sound of the week is long u. We will finish the math chapter on subtraction, and begin chapter 13: Geometry and Fractions. We will not have homework or a spelling test this week. There is no school on Friday.

Week of May 8-12

This week’s spelling words will be a review of the color words red, blue, yellow, green, orange, and purple. We have a field trip to the library this week. Students may wear their tie-dyed shirts with their uniforms that day. Mrs. Jolly’s class will be reading for the school liturgy on Friday. In math, we will work on recognizing geometric solids: rectangular prism, sphere, cube, cone, and cylinder. We will review the shapes triangle, circle, rectangle, and square; and explore trapezoid, hexagon, and rhombus. Little hands are busy this week making surprises for Mother’s Day.

Week of May 15-19

We will have a busy week! We will watch the first grade play on Monday. On Wednesday, it will be Mrs. Smith’s class vs. Mrs. Jolly’s class in a friendly game of tee ball. Mrs. Smith’s class will be reading for the school liturgy on Friday. Graduation costumes are due on Friday. We will be practicing our songs and poems for the graduation performance. We will practice our reading and writing using some first grade books and workbooks. In math, we will learn about equal parts. This gets us ready to understand fractions.

Week of May 22-26

This week will be devoted to getting ready for graduation. There will be some time spent on reminiscing and writing about our favorite parts of kindergarten. We will be getting portfolios ready to pass on to next year’s teachers.

On Monday, we will have bubble day. Students may bring bubbles from home. We will watch the 7th graders perform their rendition of “Stomp.”

On Tuesday, we will have our end of the year picnic in the park. At the park, we will meet some of our new classmates of John Paul II Academy. Students and teachers will wear our tie-dyed shirts for the picnic.

On Wednesday, St. Pius X School will have a special closing ceremony as a way to say “Goodbye” to St. Pius and “Hello” to John Paul.

On Thursday, there will be a special time near the end of the day to play games the children have brought from home.

On Friday, students may bring a puzzle to share.
