Second Grade News
Happy New Year
We would like to
extend our wishes for a very happy and healthy new year to all our
second-graders and their families. We
are happy to welcome back our students in 2006!
Religion
Second Grade at St.
Pius X is such and exciting time in your child’s religious formation. The children have received the Sacrament of
Reconciliation. Now we will begin
preparation for the very special day when each child receives the Eucharist for
the first time. This is a milestone in
your child’s life and we are honored to be a partner with you in teaching your
child about the gift of the Eucharist.
It is suggested you cover the Gold Book until just before First
Communion Day so that it will stay clean and become the treasured keepsake it
is meant to be.
Math
We are moving ahead
in math skills and will be covering money and time concepts, as well as adding
and subtracting two-digit numbers. The
children are very excited about learning how to “regroup” (carry and borrow) when
necessary. Your child will be most
successful at this new skill if he/she is confident with recalling the BASIC
MATH FACTS. The importance of studying
the basic math facts cannot be stressed enough.
You may use flashcards, computer games, orally ask facts while driving
in the car, or have your child write down facts. You will be happy to see the progress your
child makes when you set aside ten minutes a night a few times a week to go
over basic addition and subtraction facts.
Also, try to tie in math in fun ways by letting your child weigh produce
at the grocery, help you bake, or count the change in your pocket at the end of
the day. If you need a birthday idea for
a child, a traditional watch is a great idea for this age. Time and money concepts can be difficult so
reinforcement at home is beneficial. If
possible, display a traditional clock at home and encourage your child to tell
you the time.
Language Arts
We hope your child
has caught the “reading bug” and is choosing to read for pleasure at home. This is the easiest and most effective way
for your child to improve his/her reading skills. Encourage your child to read at least two AR
books a month. Your child will present a
book report to the class in the next several weeks. Details will be sent home in the Wednesday
folder. In English, students are
learning how to proofread sentences and paragraphs for mistakes so that they
can improve their own writing.
Check Supplies
This is a good time
of year to check and make sure your child has adequate supplies for school,
such as pencils, crayons, markers, and glue.
Thanks for your help in this area.
